Selection followed by deselection keystrokes

Greetings!  Somewhere along the way, it became necessary for me to deselect EACH time I have finished with the selection.  There was a time when I could just reselect another area without having to deselect the previous one first.  I could save myself thousands of keystrokes if I could eliminate that move.  Any advice would be much appreciated.
