Selective Color layer with custom range?

The Selective Color adjustment layer lets me change the amount of CMY and K for the "Reds", "Yellows", "Greens"... etc. It's very useful.

But what if I only want to adjust the Oranges (but not pure red or yellow)? Or greenish-yellows? Or the light blue of the sky but not the dark blue of the water?

Is there another tool or better way to adjust hue values for a custom color range in Photoshop?

Ideally I'd like to add my own color ranges TO the Selective Color tool. I'd be happy to hack a config file to make this happen.

The best alternative I've found is to use a Color Balance adjustment layer, then apply a mask to it using Select > Color Range. However every time the underlying art changes I have to delete and recreate the mask again.
