Smart objects turning black when you go to edit or when you change canvas size.

I have a file which has about 10 smart objects. Anytime I try to edit these smart objects by double clicking, it opens in it's new window but the image is just black. Also when I try to change the canvas size all of the smart objects turn black. Any help on why this is happening?
