Hi! I am trying to split my screen in photoshop so I can see the original photo while I am editing - I would like to have them side by side so I can see the changes gradually being made to compare the original and editted photo.

try this

image / duplicate, separate the tabbed images and size the 2 image windows so both are open alongside each other, the original and the copy to be edited.
