Torn Effect

This photographer made a cool Instagram effect of himself being torn to peices. I will paste a link bellow to this effect. I know it has to be done with key frame animations, but if anybody could help explain exactly how I can re-create this effect, that would be greatly appreciated.

That looks rather simple. I would take a layer of the person and use the polygon lasso tool to make a very rough selection for one of the pieces. Then use ctrl/cmd-J to cut out that selection and put it on a new layer. Then repeat that process with the original layer, until it's all on different layers. Then you can animate the layers to make them explode.
