Unable to rename layers in Photoshop CC 2020

I'm unable to rename a layer in PS CC2020. I was able to in CC2019. I've tried double-clicking on the layer and nothing happens. I then try going to rename layer via the menu Layer/ Rename Layer, where it highlights for a fraction of a second before it goes out again, not giving me a chance to rename. I've tried deleting preferences. Anybody got any ideas?

Or this script from a post back in 2017:

// https://forums.adobe.com/message/9693161#9693161
#target photoshop
var doc = activeDocument;
var pmt = prompt ('Type a new layer name', doc.activeLayer.name, 'Rename Layer');
doc.activeLayer.name = pmt;

That would be the normal way, but it did not work. Clicking layers/ rename
layer also didn't work. Clearing preferences failed. In the end a fresh
install of Photoshop was the answer...
Thanks anyway... 😄

Sorry for the late reply. I ended up doing a fresh install which
worked..... Until Creative Cloud and Photoshop updated yesterday and now it

I found a way around it while they fix it. I duplicate the layer and rename the copy, double work, but at least it gets renamed 😞

Cheers Stephen,

I've just done that, gave it a keyboard shortcut and now it's a single keypress on my macro keyboard. I really appreciate that....   😄

Just go to the LAYERS menu on the top of PS window,

(having the needed layer "chosen"),

and you will see the RENAME option in the drop menu... press it

😉

choosing the option isnt the option - Im having the same issue, and even if select it from with the menu, the layer freqeuntly exits edit mode straight away!  Its infurtiating, as often you'll go to delete the layer name, and because its exited edit mode already you end up deleting the layer!!
