Using Brush when Masking

I'm using PS 2021. Trying to use black brush on white mask. I had created a beveled frame around part of a flower I had photographed.  I wanted to remove part of that frame to make it seem like the flower is coming out of the frame.  Instead of painting over the frame, it's just pushing the frame color around, if that makes any sense, instead of erasing.  Any idea of what I'm doing wrong?
