Since the update from v21 to v22, I find on my Win10 PC, that the old version v21 ist still installed.
QUESTION:
Is it expected that future updates will eventually remove the v21 installation, or would I need to manually deinstall v21, and if so, would there be any pitfalls to prepare for?

You can specify what happens with the old version when you install the new version(either manual or automation installation). In the Creative Cloud application, if you have automatic updates selected, then you can also specify if you want to uninstall the previous version or not, and you can do this on a per-app basis as well. See the following

https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html

When you manually update an app, then you are presented with an option to "Remove the previous version". For uninstalling instruction, see the following

https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-remove-app.html

Generally, it is not a good idea to uninstall the older version as soon as a new one comes in. It's recommended that you have both the versions installed and test the new version. Only when you are sure that the new version is working fine for your work should you uninstall the older version. This way, you avoid any potential disruptions.

Hi

When installing a new release you are giving the option to remove previous versions, if you have auto update enabled in the Creative Cloud app older versions will be automatically removed, it's always a good idea to have the previous version installed in case of issues with a new release, Adobe are known for releasing buggy versions of new releases

If you are going to uninstall version 21, it's best to uninstall version 22 first and then 21 and reinstall version 22, you may run into issues with file associations by just removing version 21

You don't have to remove it. Most of us prefer to keep the old one around, at least for a while, in case of unforeseen problems with the new.

There's a certain best practice in managing these different versions: always install them in version order, and uninstall in reverse version order. Last in, first out. It's because of file associations (which application opens a certain file type by default).

If you do decide to remove v21 now, there's a chance it will take file associations with it and leave them orphaned. In some cases, they can be difficult to re-establish. To avoid that, do it this safe way:

  • uninstall v22
  • uninstall v21
  • then reinstall v22

Thank you all for your answers! They all were helpful, and with the first link from Manan Joshi I was able to see where I can control whether the previous version is being kept or not.

Kind regards, Andreas
