I am using PE 12 and have a movie clip that I have on my timeline. However the background behind the person is black, can I change the background color? I tried going to Project assest, than panel options, new item, color matte but it does not but the color matte behind my movie clip. I have just the video timeline selected but I it still not working. Is this a possible task and if so how? Thanks

You can use Videomerge or Chroma Key to make the background transparent and then replace it with a new background, like this:

Chroma Key and Videomerge in Premiere Elements 15 - YouTube

Though most often, to create this effect, blue or green backgrounds are used. Since your background is black, EVERYTHING in your video that is black will become transparent once Videomerge is applied.
