I just bought elements to begin editing videos. However, I'm unable to import any video of any length into the software to begin editing. Anytime I try, it says, "This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed." Any help or advice is appreciated.

What steps are you taking to import the video? You do NOT add a video by selecting File/Open. As you can see in my tutorial below, you import a video by selecting Add Media/From Folder.
If that doesn't work, tell us more about the video's format and what device created it.

I have tried that. When I use the add media/from folder, the program behaves as if the video file isn't there to begin with.It told me that the file was not supported when I tried to drag the file into the program.
The window on the left is what is shown when trying to add the media, the window on the right is what is shown when I click documents on my desktop. Same location, but the video does not appear on the left one. I created the video with OBS(Open Broadcaster Software).

Exactly what is INSIDE the video you are editing?
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the program below
Free program to get file information for PC/Mac http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download
- when you analyze your file in MediaInfo and post a screen shot in the forum, do so in TREE view
- post your information IN your message, not as an attachment that someone would have to download

As John and I say, it's likely your media. OBS can create media that is not compatible with this video editor.
Please open your OBS video in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy the text of this report and paste it to this forum. With this detailed report we can better advise you.

So after fidgeting around with some settings, I was actually able to get it to work. I found how to change the format in which OBS records in and after changing it to mp4 I was able to import a video recorded in this format with no problems.
