Errors and glitches on Elements 2022 Video editing

Hello, I upgraded  from Elements 16 to Elements 2022 and now some things don't work as well as they should, or at all! I'm on Windows 10 on a fast machine purchased for film editing.

Pan and Zoom shows me the whole video clip that was filmed, not just the segment I want to work on, so I have to guess where to put the boxes, check the preview and adjust, time and time again to get the zoom or pan where I want it to be.

If I use an old video (not filmed in 4K) as B roll, there is some weird metalic fuzziness on my finished video as it transitions from the old footage back to my new 4K footage. I can't see this in Elements while I'm editing, it only shows once the video is exported.

All transitions, like film fade or cross fade, also have the metalic fuzziness on the finished video, but not on the timeline.

Any suggestions for how to change these issues would be very gratefully received.

Hard to say without more details or a chance to examine your project or workflow. And I assume you're not trying to open a project in version 2022 that you started in version 16, because that's a sure recipe for disaster.

My first thought is that most of your issues are likely related to a mismatch between your project settings and your video specs. Try using the Pan & Zoom tool on a photo instead of a video clip, for instance. Do you still get strange results? Technically the Pan & Zoom tool is designed for creating motion over photos rather than video. There are better ways to pan and zoom in on your video.

As for your B roll issues, there's a situation where it's very likely you've got a mismatch between project settings and video specs. It's hard to say for sure without knowing more about your old video or how your project is set up.

Hi Steve, thanks for your quick response.

I'm not opening a project started in an earlier version. I haven't learnt any other ways to pan or zoom on my footage yet. I'll do a search online and see if I can find out other ways. I film myself (gardening videos) so can't zoom or pan as I film. My only option is to do it during the editing process.

Old B roll was filmed years ago before I was filming in 4K, so yes it's mismatched, but I could add it without a problem in the older version of Elements. šŸ™‚

Hi Steve, could I ask for a bit more help please? I've created a video today using 4K footage taken on my iphone (rather than my camera as normal) and I've added a photo taken on the same phone. Here is what is happening on the finished video as the photo ends and it goes back to the video. It has done this with both my camera 4K main footage and now the phone footage as well. It looks like I won't be able to add B roll to my videos or that I'll need to go back to using the earlier version of Elements that I've been using for the last 5 years - and if I do that I won't be able to add the videos that I've created with the new Elements. My videos rely heavily on B roll so I'm feeling a bit desperate. Any ideas of what I need to do to make the new version work for me? Settings for the video are red cinema for 4K with 24 fps which is what I film in.

Based on your screen shot, I suspect that your video driver is out of date.  Use your computer (not Premiere Elements) to update the driver from the video card's website.  If Nvidia, select the "studio", not "game" driver.

Mixing old "HD" footage with new "4K" footage needs project setting management.  When I do it, I start the project with an "old" clip to set an HD project.  Then I follow with the 4K clips.  At output, I stick with settings to match the project.

Don't abandon your new version because you are mixing resolutions.  It can handle that well.

Thank you Bill, I have downloaded an up to date version of the driver and set it to Studio. No idea if I've done it correctly, but will have a create a new video today to see how it gets on. Thank you so much for your suggestion - I shall report back when I know if that does the job šŸ™‚

Kindest - Liz

Hi Bill, following on from my last reply, I've updated the Nvidia driver, but sadly, the weird colour screen is still happening when I put a photo as B roll over the 4K footage. Most frustrating!
