I opened an existing project. Instead of the pictures I am getting an image indicating :media off-line for all. the text of each pictures appear but not the picture!!

Your pictures were either moved or the folders they are in had some sort of name change.
Are the photos are in the same location on your hard drive? If so, it should not be difficult to re-link them.
