Premier Elements Organizer won't play AVI files

I am running the latest Premier Elements 2019 on a Mac with OS 10.14.2 (Mojave). I just moved my Elements Database to this computer and have several video formats. They all play from the Organizer except the AVI files. The adobe FAQ says if your system will play the file then Elements can play the file. Wrong! The file will play on my Mac. I simply double-click it in Finder and it opens and plays in QuickTime. When I am in Elements Organizer and double click on the clip, I get the rainbow swirl and have to force quit elements.

Any help getting the AVI files to play from the Organizer would be greatly appreciated.

The adobe FAQ says if your system will play the file then Elements can play the file.

That is not quite true (can you point me to that text file)

This applies to Premiere Pro but might apply to Elements also.

no support Quicktime 7

What kind of avi's are they, as an avi is but a wrapper. Need to know the codec.

"For a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) on codecs, and how they determine playback of files, see Codecs: Frequently asked questions in Microsoft Help. Adobe Premiere Elements supports codecs that the operating system (Windows, Mac OS) running on your computer supports." see: Supported file formats in Adobe Premiere Elements

I take from that that if it is running and working on my system, then it should run and work in Premier Elements.  The table of supported formats on that same page lists AVI.

Like I said, it plays on my computer in QuickTime but not in Elements Organizer nor will it load in Premier Elements Editor.  I get the message shown in the image:

As this is shot on a photo camera chances are it uses the mjpeg codec.
