My Sony DCR-TRV-480 is no longer recognized by Adobe Pemiere Elements Ver 14.1. I connect to my PC via iEE-1394 cable and can view the video using VLC Media player. When trying to add media, the only option is WDM device. I have reinstalled Premeier Elements 14.0 and tried connecting my camera berfore upgrading to Ver. 14.1 but still unable to connect to camera. I have tried installing a Legacy Windows driver thinking that something in W10 has now blocked the camera, but still no luck. I used this Sony camera in August of 2021 and now in December it will no longer detect my camera.

Use WinDV instead and then import the files into Elements.

Nancy:

Why would V14.1 recognize my camera media in August of 2021 and now in December no longer recognize the same setup using the iEEE-1394 connection.  What changed?

Microsoft issues a Windows update just about every month... my GUESS is that an update changed something enough that your old program is, as you mentioned, blocked

John:

I thought the same, so I found a legacy driver for my iEEE 1394 host controller, installed it but this did not fix the problem.  I am hoping some else will have found the solution to whatever W10 has done to prevent PE14.1 from reading my camera on the 1394 controller.

The problem seems to be linked to WDM device drivers, as that is the only input the PE 14.1 is looking for when choosing camera input.

Any thoughts on WDM work arounds?

Premiere Elements 14 has never interfaced with an IEEE-1394 FireWire connection. That feature was removed from Premiere Elements in version 12.

So, as Ann says, the only way to capture your Digital 8 video over a FireWire connection is with a third-party app like WinDV.

Thanks Ann for your advice it worked perfectly.  I downloaded WinDV and used the program to capture my video via the 1394 controller.  WinDV created chapters based on the time code on the recording.  Easy to  import in PE 14.1. so I am back to converting my home movies to DVD.

Thanks again,

Jeff
