Time remapping not working in Adobe Premier Elements 2023

When I am using time remapping to speed up a clip in my timeline I select the clip, change the speed to "fast" or "very fast" or enter the desired # of seconds and hit render.  About half the time, it freezes up and completely stops working.  I have to cancel the time remap, hit save on the project and then have to use my PC's task manager to "end task" because i get then unending spinning wheel of death.  The other half of the time it works fine.  Any ideas?

Without knowing more about your clips, project and computer, my first guess would be that you don't have enough disk space for Premiere Elements' temporary work files.

My clips are generally videos of driving or kayaking, can vary in length from 15 seconds to multiple minutes.  The project is a simple travel vlog showing people where we've been.  No fancy effects in use except time wrapping.  Computer is PC with plenty of capacity.  Project is worked on and saved to external hard drive and I have 3.94 TB of free space on that.  One other thing I notice:  the freeze up tends to happen when I am taking a longer clip (maybe 2-3 minutes) and trying to speed it up to a short length (like less than 5 seconds or so).  This is the only thing I can identify as to the difference when it freezes up and when it doesn't.  BTW--just upgraded to Elements 2023 and I didn't have this problem on Elements 2019. Thanks for your help.

External drives can have a "bottleneck" issue.  It may be slowing down your overall computer performance.  Put your project and source files on the primary drive.
