Video appearing corrupted in workspace but fine in preview

Hi All,

I have been trying to solve my problem for several weeks. When importing some GoPro footage into Premiere Elements, it is not read or decoded properly. Please see the annotated screen shot below:

The files play correctly in all programs, even Premiere itself, however they don't play correctly when they are added into the workspace. Any tips would be very much appreciated.

First guess is that you may need a Nvidia graphics card driver update.  The "studio" version is preferred over the "gamer" version.   Second guess is that the GoPro codec doesn't match the project.   GoPro's tend to use some unique video formats (codecs) to achieve their unique features.  They may not all work well with Premiere Elements.  You might have sucess with useing the (free) Handbrake program to convert to the universal H.264 codec.

Changing my NVIDIA driver from game ready to studio did not solve the issue. However, re-encoding the file in with handbrake did. Thanks for your help!

Did you re-encode to different resolution?

I kept the original resolution.

I attempted to simply change encoding while keeping the original as much as possible to reduce the amount of time the re-encoding took. I did not succeed, although I did not try very hard. Handbrake ended up reducing the file size about about a half. Therefore, I am sure I have lost quality in the process during this first attempt.

It looks like APE has a problem with 2.7k HEVC files. I did a test with Adobe Premiere Elements 2021 and 2024

 In APE2024 you can’t import 2.6 HECV files. APE says that the format is not supported.

In APE2021 you can import such a file, however it looks scrambled in project assets, but it looks normal in preview monitor.

In general, 2.7k format should be fully supported by APE in both H.264 and H.265.

Adobe doesn’t say anything about resolution limits in their supported format table:

APE has a problem with 2.7 resolution and they haven't fixed it for very long time as many other problems......
