I filmed myself on my laptop. The files are in the camera roll on my laptop. When I double-click them in my camera roll, it plays and I can hear myself speaking. When I add the same file into Adobe Premiere Elements, I can see the pictures but no audio. When I look at it in Expert mode, I can see that it's unmuted, the sound track is there in the audio file and the graphic equaliser is moving up and down but it just won't make any sound.

You don't say where these video files originated or what device recorded them, but that can be a factor.
Open one of your video files in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy and paste the report the program generates to this forum. Once we know the specs of the videos you are trying to edit we can recommend more specific action.

I filmed the video files with camera built into my laptop (it's a Lenovo Ideapad 320). I'll do what you say and get back to you. Thank you for replying.

Your video is an unusual video format, one that is generally designed to be a playable delivery format and not an editable video.
You can try converting the video to an MP4 using the free download HandBrake. It will produce a 640x480 30 fps standard resolution video -- and the conversion should also convert the audio to an editable format.
That should take care of a number of issues (including dealing with the fact that this video has a variable frame rate). Try it and see if that makes your video editable. But, unfortunately, the cam built into your laptop is not saving your video in an editable format.

I DID run the video through Handbrake because I was told it was the only way to fix the way Adobe Premiere Elements makes everything out of sync. I ran the original video through the MediaInfo app and here's the report.

I don't see anything in your video report that would cause a problem.
And, since you're seeing both the waveform for the audio and indications that the audio is playing, it's most likely a setting in your preference.
Go to the program's Preferences (under the Edit menu on a PC) and select Audio Hardware. Switch around some of the audio output settings and most likely this will fix your playback problem.
