Adobe Premier Elements 2018 - iphone movies not displaying picture, just audio

Hi,

I hope my question is in the right place.

I just bought Adobe Premier Elements 2018 and tried to upload iphone movies I created to it. I first saved the movies on my desktop and then from there uploaded into Adobe Premier Elements 2018.

The problem is the movie doesn't show any picture it is just audio. I tried different clips, it's all the same issue.

I didn't change any settings on my iphone to make these movies, nor I changed anything in Adobe Premier Elements 2018.

I also played the movies on a player, so I know there is a picture and also play them on my iphone no problem.

Please help and please have in mind I am a beginner.

Thanks

You don't say what operating system you have -- but the first thing I'd do, if you're on Windows, is ensure Quicktime is installed.

QuickTime 7.6 for Windows

Beyond that, your issue is most likely related to the fact that may iPhone camera apps save their video with variable frame rates, which can be difficult for video editors to work with.

Open a sample of your video in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set the View menu to Text and then copy and paste the report it generates to this forum. Once we see it we'll be better able to make recommendations.

I really appreciate your response.

I am on Windows 10 and my phone is an iphone 8 (the new one that just came out).

Since I posted this I discovered something major. And that is that Adobe Premier Elements 2018 doesn't support mp4 video file formats (which is the iphone video file format): Supported file formats in Adobe Premiere Elements

I don't mind providing all other info but can you or someone else advise if there is any workaround this? I would like to be able to import directly into Adobe Premier Elements 2018 without converting the files. I used a converter and it works but it takes time and is a hassle.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Steve suggested you make sure Quicktime is installed.  That should probably work.  Have you done that?

He also explained that there can be a variable frame rate challenge.  Can you check a file?  If you don't want to check a file, would you share one on DropBox or similar?  I'll check it on my Windows 10/Premiere Elements 2018 computer.

Premiere Elements DOES do MP4 files.

MP4s are definitely supported in Premiere Elements -- EXCEPT when they have variable frame rates, MovieEnthusiast. So please show us your MediaInfo report so we can see if that is the case in your situation.

Thanks so much for your help you guys are awesome.

I installed Quicktime. Am I supposed to do something with it after I install it?

I tried importing the file again. This time I cannot even import the file, I am getting a "Codec missing or unavailable error":

As we suspected, the issue is that the video uses variable frame rate compression. You'll need to run the videos through Handbrake to fix the issue. I've got a tutorial showing you how.

Thanks, Steve! It worked. I was not familiar with frame rates. Despite finding another solution, I wish the iphone movies can be imported directly into this editor. It would be a major time saver and very convenient.

If you can't set your phone's camera app to record in constant frame rate, it might be worth looking for a phone app that does.

If you plan  to edit your video on Premiere Elements (or pretty much any video editing program), shooting in constant frame rate will save you a world of headaches.
