APE 2018 and .mov files

Running Windows 10 and APE 2018.

We shot a 28 minute TV show yesterday. It generated a .mov file, 26.5 gig. The show was recorded on a TriCaster.

The file failed in APE 2018 generating audio and no video, just a green screen.

I ran it in Quicktime and it played just fine. I tried it in APE 2014 and it ran just fine.

Why is ADE 2018 not happy with .mov files?

I risk telling you what you already know! "MOV" is a container like "MP4" or "WAV". In those containers can be a multitude of codecs, frame rates, etc. One way we can look is with a (free) program called "MediaInfo". It has a "tree" view in the menu. Can you cut an paste that view to here?

I don't have any TriCaster knowledge or experience. My guess is that it is using a unique codec required for streaming or broadcast. It may be using a variable frame rate.

Premiere Elements is marketed by Adobe to users of common consumer level cameras that have "ordinary" codecs. It is not intended to be universal. A quick google for "edit tricaster video" suggests TriCaster has some unique editing software.

As a guess, you might try putting Quicktime on your computer. Premiere Elements may be able to "borrow" whatever codec is being used. In some past cases that has worked.

Another potential solution would be to use the (free) Handbrake program to transcode your TriCaster footage to a more common, generic codec.

Well the .mov file works in APE 2014.

My hobby is Public Access TV. That's how we can use a Tricaster.

I have Quicktime on my computer.

My current work around is to export the sections I need from APE 2014 into APE 2018 as mp4. That seems to work.

But I still don't know why .mov file does not work in APE 2018.

Ann, Thank you but you can't do that. The extension gives the computer instructions as to what software the computer needs to open the file.

If you put a Cadillac logo on a Ford it would still be a Ford.

If you put an Excel extension, .xlsx, on a Word document, .docx, it would still be a Word Document.

Just try it. Its not uncommon to do that with video files. Mov is just a wrapper.

Open your MOV in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy the report it generates to this forum.

As Bill said, MOVs can be made up of any of dozens of audio and video codecs. Until we know what exactly we're dealing with, it will be difficult to give you any specific recommendations.

Your video uses a ProRes codec (apco). You're going to have challenges editing it in most consumer video editing programs.

You may want to download a free trial of a professional program (like Premiere Pro or Vegas Pro) and see if it does a better job with it.

My recommendation anyway. You're just going to drive yourself nuts trying to edit it with Premiere Elements.

I know that, since Apple dropped support of Quicktime for Windows, software developers have been trying to build their own support into the video editing programs.

This support may be limited, compared to the old system.

Beyond that, I don't know.
