No audio when trying to upload MPEG movie from Sony DCR-SX45 handycam

When I try to upload files from the video card used in my  Sony DCR-SX45 into Adobe Premiere Elements 2018, I get video but no audio.  I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 2018.  I have looked through the FAQs and Forum responses, and do not find any help for this issue.  I bought the program specifically to be able to edit my video files, most of which I take with this camcorder.  Any help would be appreciated.

What operating system do you have?

In version 2018, Adobe removed support of AC3/Dolby audio. However, this audio format still receives support from Windows 10.

If, however, you have Windows 7 or 8, you will not have support for AC3/Dolby audio.

I have Windows 10.  I am able to hear sound using Windows Media Player and Movies & TV but not once I add the media to Adobe Premiere Elements - 2018.

Open one of your videos in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy and paste the report it generates to this forum.

Meantime, do you get any sound from Premiere Elements when you add, say, an MP3 or any other audio file? In other words, is your lack of sound unique to the video from this camcorder?

I did try a video from my Olympus camera.  This file successfully loaded both video and audio.

Indeed it is AC3/Dolby Digital audio, which is why Premiere Elements 2018 isn't playing it. And the fact that your Olympus video does play video and audio confirms it.

However, as I said, Windows 10 should supply the necessary components for this audio. I'm not sure why it's not.

Anybody have any suggestions?

help. my imports from a sony dcr sx85 into Premiere Elements only imports the video file and not the audio file. However, I am able to drag a random audio clip into the timeline and hear it. Any suggestions for a fix? Thanks so much in advance.

Please read this entire thread, cecilia. There is not a fix and there will not be a fix issued because Adobe has chosen to no longer include the Dolby Digital component with Premiere Elements.

I did find a somewhat complicated work around.  If you still have the Sony CD that came with your video camera, you can download the software that will allow you to convert the file from an .MPG to an MPEG-4 file.  Once you have made that conversion, your file will have audio and video.  If you've already installed the Sony software on your computer - look for the Play Memories Home software.  This is the program that will allow you to convert the files.  It is tedious and complicated - but it works.
