I have read all the posts but am obviously missing something as I have somehow managed to do this before. I have a Sony AVCHD camera and have imported some files but there is no audio. When I play them with VLC it is there! i'm running a mac with High Sierra.

It depends. If nothing on your timeline plays audio, it's a setting in Premiere Elements preferences. But if only this video plays without audio, it's likely that your audio is AC-3, also known as Dolby Digital, which is no longer supported in Premiere Elements.

If this is the latter case, your operating system should provide the Dolby Digital support. On Windows, Windows 10 will play Dolby Digital while Windows 7 does not. I would assume any Mac OS would provide this support, so I'm not sure if that's this issue but we can help you troubleshoot the file.

As you can see, your video does indeed use AC3/Dolby Digital audio compression. Though I can't imagine why your operating system wouldn't offer support for it.

One test would be to run  your video through Handbrake, a converter which will turn it into a standardized MP4. See if that makes a difference. If so, we'll know what we're aiming at.

You still haven't said if only this video has no sound or if nothing in your project (music, audio, etc.) has no sound.

Thanks for your support. It is just the MTS files that don't have audio attached and the project can import a variety of other types of files successfully. I've just reinstalled handbrake and converted it to Mp4 and it's fine so the audio is already there in the MTS file. I'd like to get this sorted sd I have quite a lot of AVCHD material to work with.

Unfortunately I'm not a Mac expert so I don't know why High Sierra isn't providing your AC3 support (the way Windows 10 does).
