i’m making a 30 min movie. I’m starting with large .avi movie clips. After i find the section in the clip that i want to use, what format should i save it in to import back into the movie. I don’t want to lose quality. Thanks.

It depends. Are these AVIs captured from a miniDV camcorder over a FireWire connection? If not they may not be standard definition DV-AVIs.

Open your AVI in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy and paste the report it generates to this forum. We'll better be able to advise you once we know what you're working with.
