Object mask tool not working. mask disappears after first frame

I click on a person I want to mask using the object mask tool. It highlights the person correctly. I go to trackking and click the correct arrows. As soon as I do that, the mask goes away but it continues tracking. The mask its still there at the original position when I created it but doesnt follow at all.

When I drop it to Opacity, the mask is only there for the 1st frame then the screen goes black.

You need to be in Frame mode not Clip mode.

Use object masking in Premiere Pro

with object mask tool you dont need to be in frame mode. it draws the mask itself right?
