Resetting preferences should help.

UPDATE: The fix for this problem has been verified on mac and win at Pr25.2xBeta050. Please update to that build or later when you can.

Thank you @Lounger and everyone else who took the time to report this to us. We have found the root cause and a fix is on the way. For now, as a workaround, please make sure the Audio preference "Play audio while scrubbing" is checked ON and then restart PrPro after checking it on or off. See the attached image for clarity.

Hi @Lounger,

Thanks for submitting your bug report. We are looking into the matter now, we understand how vital it is to be able to playback. If you have your system specs and wouldn't mind sharing them with us,  Please see How do I write a bug report . I hope we can help you soon and we are sorry for the frustration!

Thanks,

Ian

After upgrading from 24.x to 25.1 I noticed that the playhead is lagging while playing back. Generally the UI feels sluggish. It's even noticable while dragging the mouse (Outside of Premiere I get the fluid 144hz motion of the cursor).

  • Fresh installation of Premiere 25.1
  • Everything resetted (settings and workspaces) and cleaned
  • No Plugins

  • Windows 11 (23H2 OS Build 22631.4460)
  • GTX 1080 TI
    • Tried with driver version 566.36 (newest as of today) and 560.94
  • Intel 9900K

Immediately after opening a project, playback in the sequence or program monitor panels will work until I attempt any editing task or even relocating the play head - from there on, the play head no longer responds to tapping the spacebar or clicking the play button, even though the play button indicates that it's in playback mode by changing to a stop button.

However, relocating the play head does refresh the current frame, and dragging the play head or shuttling with the left/right arrow keys does scrub through the footage, which makes me think that the "play" command is being ignored, rather than some graphics driver failure.

The only way I can temporarily regain normal playback is by playing a clip in the source monitor, then switching back to the sequence or program monitor. But as soon as I attempt anything from there, the play head  freezes again.

[ UPDATE ] - No change in Build 47

Steps to reproduce:
    1. ... To recommence play on either the preview or primary Edit panel I need to run the opposite playhead and then immediately click the playhead I want to use and vice versa or neither will recommence after stopping the playhead, without restarting the program.

With the new beta version, for some reason when I move the playhead, the play button / space bar no longer works. It shows it should be playing, but no time advances.

Same thing when bringing up the preview area, play button shows it should be playing, but that isn't happening.

If I switch between the clip preview area and the main preview area (sorry, I'm not clear on the actual names of things) I can manipulate it to start working. It's a really odd error.

Same exact issue, playhead is completely broken in this update. I've found I can sometimes get the main area to play if I hit the play button in the preview area. Sometimes this works.

Currently on Build 48 and same issue.

If I reposition the playhead in the program monitor or timeline by either clicking or with arrow keys I can no longer start playback in the program monitor or timeline. If I then start playback in the source monitor and switch back to the program monitor, playback works again until you reposition the playhead again.

One thing I want to add is that it also is broken the other way round. Meaning if you play in the source monitor it works fine, as soon as you reposition the playhead in the source monitor playback stops working. That is until you start playback in the program monitor and then switch back to the source monitor again.

So if you reposition the playhead in any way, playback is broken afterwards.

I have written this before, and I know this is beta, but:
This is basic functionality. If you actually want users to test out new features in beta (like the color management) you have to somehow make sure at least basic editing works. This is at least the third completely show-stopping bug in Premiere beta in the last 2 months. Not being able to rollback builds to get a working setup again is a huge problem if you keep introducing bugs like this.

I know I should expect bugs, but I'd assume it would be in the new features, not "playing back footage".

Same exact issue. Updated to newest build and the problem still persists. Had to go back to the release version to get the timeline to play.

Just downloaded and began using PrPro Beta 25.2.0 build 47 on Mac Studio M2 Max chip running Sequoia 15.1.1. When viewing clips in eithere the source window or program window, the space bar will start and stop the playhead; however, once I manually advance the playhead with the mouse, I can no longer get the playhead to start or stop with the space bar.  This does not happen with the regular program (25.1.0 Build 73) which I also have installed

Updated this morning to Beta Version 48; the error still persist; Timelines are only playing in the Source Monitor; all attempts running/playing in the timeline do not work; in the inspector window the button changes from stop to play, but only the button, the timeline won`t play; at this moment PP is unusable!

Same experience for me. My temp workaroung is to quickly switch to the Source Monitor play a few frames and switch back to the Program monitor. This seems to re-enable the playhead via the spacebar or play button.

I created a hot key sequence: Shift 2 (to open Source Monitor), Space (to Play), Delay 100 ms, Space (to stop), Shift 4 (to switch back to Program Monitor). I did this with my Stream Deck but you could easily use any hot key app like Autohotkey. Takes less than a second to run and it reactivates the space-to-play. Of course you need to do it every time the player stops.

I'm sure a fix will be coming soon but this is my workaround to get my project finished.

IGNORE what I said below. We have found the repro, a workaround and a fix. See my "Correct Answer" post.

Thank you @Lounger and everyone else who took the time to report this to us. We're working hard to reproduce the problem locally which is necessary to isolate the root cause and fix it. So we'll need the following specifics from anyone willing to share them with us:

PrPro build used (example: Pr25.2xBeta048)
OS used (example: MacOS Sonoma 14.1.1)
Video and/or Audio format used in Timeline (a short sample file would be even better)
Effects applied (if any)
Anything else specific in your timeline?
