Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects, and Character Animator on MacOS now support automatically switching to the current active audio device. A new default option, "System Default," is available in Public Beta builds and will enable the application audio input and output devices to match the current selections in Mac's Sound settings.
This means, as you attach USB microphones or plug in headphones to your laptop, rather than a pop up notification informing you the devices have changed and requiring you to manually change the device in your application preferences, the application will simply readjust to the new devices. This may stop any current playback operations, but should otherwise be silent and nonobtrusive.
There are certain devices, such as Apple Airpods and other bluetooth headsets, which have asymmetrical sample rates for the input and output interfaces. For instance, Airpods can play audio at up to 48kHz but the microphone only supports 8k and 16k sample rates. Adobe applications require matching sample rates and in this scenario will disable the input to ensure the highest quality playback. You can override this restriction by manually selecting the Airpod as your default input and accepting the lowered playback sample rate. (It will only affect playback and will not have any impact on renders and exports.)

Happy to announce this feature has shipped in the latest release of Premiere Pro! We have a Windows equivalent on the roadmap, though I don't have any dates yet. Of course, you'll see it in the public beta builds first. Thanks for the support!
