We are seeking feedback for a new feature that is available in Premiere Beta Builds starting in beta build 14.2x5: Filtering Properties in the Effect Controls panel
Overview
Before this feature, there was no way to limit the Effect Controls panel to show a smaller set of interesting parameters. We have added two new filtering options: "Show Only Keyframed Properties" and "Show Only Edited Properties". In order to switch back to show all properties, we are adding a third filtering menu item: "Show All Properties".
We have added a new "filter properties" button (funnel) to the lower right corner of the Effect Controls panel. On click, the button reveals adropdown menu with the three filters ("Show All Properties", "Show Only Keyframed Properties" and "Show Only Edited Properties"). When filtered to show only edited or keyframed properties we indicate this by showing a small green dot next to the funnel icon.
Premiere always launches with the default filter "Show All Properties", we intentionally do not remember the state of this filter. When working with multiple open projects, the filters state is true for all projects (the filter is not saved with the project).
New Keyboard Commands
There are three new keyboard commands added to the Effect Controls panel, which are not assigned by default but assignable through the user. The keyboard shortcuts have the same names as the menu items ("Show All Properties", "Show Only Keyframed Properties" and "Show Only Edited Properties").
Currently, for the keyboard shortcuts to work, the Effect Controls panel needs to be in focus. We have decided to change this behavior to allow the shortcuts to work globally with any panel in focus.
"Show Only Keyframed Properties": Making animating graphics less tedious in the Effect Controls Panel
If filtered to "Show Only Keyframed Properties" the Effect Controls will only show properties that have the stopwatch enabled (blue).
When creating a motion graphics in Premiere, the Effect Controls panel is the place best suited to add and edit animation with keyframes. When adding keyframes to common properties such as Position, Scale, Opacity and Rotation to multiple graphic layers it can become very hard to adjust timing of those keyframes, especially across multiple layers. Filtering to show only keyframed properties makes it easier to lasso-select multiple keyframes the user might want to drag at the same time.
We are not disabling the ability to keyframe or edit other properties, we are simply not showing them in the Effect controls. Filtering in the Effect Controls panel does not block Direct Manipulation in the Program Monitor. Keyframing and editing properties through the Essential Graphics Panel is also still possible as well as editing and keyframing properties through the fx context menu of the track item/ rubber band in the Timeline panel.
When adding keyframes to a property that has no keyframes through the timeline or Essential Graphics panel while filtering to show only keyframed properties, that property will be added to the Effect Controls without needing to refresh the view. However, we are not removing properties from the Effect Controls when removing keyframes. If the user wishes to update the view to no longer show that property, they can deselect and re-select the track item.
Filtered out effect/filters will still show up, allowing the user to still drag and drop effects inside of the Effect Controls panel or to the Effect Controls panel.
"Show Only Edited Properties": Simplifying effects
The idea behind this filter is to allow users to focus on only the properties they care about and not be distracted by the rest.
Some effects that you can use in Premiere Pro have a lot of properties, some third party plugins take up a lot of space for displaying their brand. But the user may want to focus on one or two sliders only and would like to not be distracted by all the other properties. This filter gives users the ability to only show the properties of a filter they actually changed away from its default. The expectation is that those are probably the properties the user will want to keep an eye on and tweak during the edit.
Filtered out properties can still be edited through other panels, such as the timeline, the Lumetri panel or the Essential Graphics panel. Editing properties through other panels will add them to the Effect Controls while filtered to show only edited properties. On the other hand, resetting effects back to their default will not remove them from the Effect Controls automatically. Deselecting and re-selecting the track item or switching between filters will update the view.
Changes to Expanding/Collapsing all filters in the Effect Controls with alt/option click on disclosure triangle:
We have also changed the behavior to expand and collapse all effects in the Effect Controls panel. Previously, holding down alt/opt while expanding one effect, expanded all effects as well as any parameter and group inside that effect, making the Effect Controls panel very large and crowded. Now, if you alt/opt-click on an effect, this will only expand or collapse effects while leaving the disclosure triangle of anything inside of effects untouched. Alt/opt-clicking on a parameter or group inside an effect will now only expand or collapse the disclosure triangle of anything inside that effect, while not changing the disclosure triangle for any other effects.
Excluded effects and known issues:
- The Opacity intrinsic filter is a unique case where it is time varying with no keyframes, reset of Opacity actually adds a keyframe. This was causing a crash in the filtered by edited value state. We solved this by excluding the Opacity filter of being filtered out. We always show it as edited or keyframed.
- The effects "Clip Name" and "Simple Text" automatically adjust their initial size based on the sequence you drop it into. For example, if you drop clip name in a DV NTSC sequence, the size is 5.5%. So they will always show edited.
- The Warp Stabilizer will keep the caret, even when filtered, this has to do with the analysis property.
- Block dissolve is a legacy AE effect. There is a more current version in AE. We decided to not make any changes to this obsolete effect.
- The Lumetri filters has an open bug where when resetting a Look or Input LUT parameters disables the dropdown menu. This way, when resetting the groups for those parameters, we are not filtering them out as expected and you will always see "Basic" and "Creative" show up in the ECP.
