Can you tell us why? I have an M1 Macbook Pro Max and although I have a few glitches (detailed elsewhere) changing text colour, size is a breeze. In you Essentials Graphic Panel, after you change a caption to your desired format, simply click the up arrow and select push to track and all your captions will be formatted the same way. You can also create a style here and save it for future use.

Captioning performance problems, affecting some users and not others, have been reported over several versions.

What version are you using? The Release version 24.1.0 is now out.

John offers one good strategy for some problems - even if you have slow performance, you cover a lot of ground with one edit. And you can plan your strategy even if you are using multiple styles by deciding on a base style that will minimize later changes. This gets tricky, since creating a new style applies to the whole caption track.

But some captioning performance problems are hard to avoid. Here is my list of the workarounds that at least some users say have helped.

Turn OFF "Show duplicate frame markers."

Disable the caption track, and edit in the Text panel.

Open only one sequence with captions at a time - and one Project at a time.

Zoom in on the timeline so fewer captions show.

Work in the Program Monitor rather than the Text Panel.

Close the Text Panel.

Open PR before opening a project (e.g. instead of double clicking a project file as some users do).

Switch renderer from Metal to software only.

Let us know what helps (and doesn't).

LATEST

Here's an update of this "all workarounds" list.

Captioning performance problems that affect some users and not others, have been reported over several versions. This is my latest update on helpful workarounds that various users have reported. Yes, some are opposites!

As of this post, the current Release version is 24.1.0 and Beta version is 24.3.0.007.

  1. Turn OFF "Show duplicate frame markers."
  2. Edit in the Text panel, with or without disabling the caption track.
  3. Open only one sequence with captions at a time - and one Project at a time.
  4. Zoom in on the timeline so fewer captions show.
  5. Work in the Program Monitor rather than the Text Panel.
  6. Close the Text Panel.
  7. Open PR before opening a project (e.g. instead of double-clicking a project file as some users do).
  8. Switch renderer from Metal to software only.
  9. Delete all media cache files (unclear is this is a temporary or longer-lasting help)
  10. Turn off selection follows playhead.
  11. Set audio hardware default input to None
  12. Disable Auto Scrolling in the Text window

Note that a problem with delays in Release version 24.1 using Source media transcripts reported with Macs may be helped by a fix in the Beta version, 24.2.0, build 78 or later:
