Sorry for the minor novel, but I wanted to point out what steps I've taken for last few months.
Curently using Premere 24.5
I work in broadcast. Part of my job is to edit the news opens. We use a project that has the individual show templates. These templates have various media, including the opening AE exported graphic. You know, the station logo flies in and the show time comes up then the whole thing transitions off to the first news headline. Each template (there are 8) has it's own open.
This AE created open, about 3-4 seconds, is an AVI. Specifically, it's a Matrox MPEG2 I-frame HD + alpha codec AVI. If i'm working elsewhere on the timeline and I put the playhead over the AVI, Premiere freezes for 4 seconds. Almost every time (90%). This is a huge interruption in the workflow, especially in broadcast where I can get the last element 10 minutes before air.
During this 4 second delay, the CPU doesn't spike, the GPU doesn't spike, and the Memory doesn't spike. I can't render it on the timeline since the open sits on V5 so when I add video underneath it I have to render it again.
I have: maximized the RAM used by Premiere, reset the preferences, deleted the cache, tested this on 3 different machines using Win 10 and Win 11, tested this on Premere 25.1 (we're not supposed to have this yet, someone accidently updated), moved the opens to a local hard drive (currently on a network drive) and relinked them. Same delay.
I cannot get new media files in a better format as this is handled by a separate department who gets their guidance on formats from a central graphics hub. This particular codec is low compression, high bitrate, so they don't want to change it. When I mention it I am told it is "on their radar."
I know, what about proxies? I was hesitant at first since the media is on a network drive, but as I said I recently moved the opens to a local drive so I was finally able to convert them to ProRes 422 proxies. 2 minor issues with this; the opens are supposed to have an alpha channel and I haven't had much luck creating proxies with alpha (it's only a few frames I need to see through though), and even after I created the proxies I was still getting the delay. Turns out it's not just the video that creates the delay. Because the AUDIO is still attached to the AVI, it can cause the same delay as well. I had to Render and Replace all the audio on all the timelines to WAV to finally remove the delay.
So, while I can now edit the timelines without a delay, I would still rather have found the cause of the delay in the AVI's. They're not big files and Premeire can certainly handle other, newer formats without an issue. I'm just curious as to why it's this particular format/codec.
