Hold frame not following parameters or effects after the duration of the original clip it belongs to

I have a video clip which is 00:00:04:05 long (random lenght). Close to the end, let's pick the 00:00:03:00 TC, I need to hold the image and extend it so the full sequence is 00:00:06:00 long. So I go to that timecode with the playhead, click the clip, go to Clip > Video Options... > Add Frame Hold, and now with the hold create I can extend up to TC 00:00:06:00. Now I want to add a pan to the hold frame section. I select the clip, then on the Effect Controls panel I go to Motion, Position, click on the stopwatch to add a keyframe to the first frame of the hold, add a keyframe to the last frame of the hold and move the image to any place far from the original position.

In theory, if we go to the start of the video and hit play, we would see the video playing, when it gets to 00:00:03:00 the image will stop and the full frame will start moving non-stop until the playhead gets to the end at 00:00:06:00... but it doesn't, the movement stops at 00:00:04:05 which is the lenght of the original clip. And if you want to make things even weirder, add the 'Horizontal Flip' effect to the hold frame and now the image doesn't even move during the hold frame.

Tested on 3 different computers:

  • 1 Mac Studio M2 Max on Sonoma 14.7.5 running Premiere Pro v25.1.
  • 1 Mac Studio M2 Max on Sonoma 14.2 running Premiere Pro v24.6.5 and Premiere Pro v25.2.1
  • 1 Mac mini M4 Pro on Sequoia 15.4 running Premiere Pro v25.1

Tested with H264 and Apple ProRes Proxy media with different frame sizes and different frame rates.

Hi @Canelson,

Thank you for submitting a bug report and for providing files. I think I see the issue you are referring to.

As another workaround, you could also export a still through Export Frame with the little camera button in the Program monitor (or with Shift + E), have 'Import into project' selected, and use it instead for a little more flexibility with any changes you need to apply to it.

Sorry for the frustration,
Dani

Keyframes are added to the original clip not the hold frame.

You need to add keyframes to both sections or

Nest then add the pan movement.

Thanks for your answer! Although it is a solution, it doesn't seem reasonable or intuitive. The hold frame should work the same way all the time, not depending on the position it is on the original clip. Even Adobe's documentation doesn't mention nests should be used on special occasions, and that the expected use for a hold frame is the same as for a still image, which it's not happening in this case.

You can put a cut at the point of the frame hold, then animate that portion with keyframes.

There is already a cut at the Frame hold position.

Frame hold is just a separate clip and needs to be keyframed separately.

If you want both segments in one clip then nesting is the way to go.

@MyerPj When I create the frame hold a cut is created on the clip, the problem I encountered is that the hold frame cannot be animated as I need because the animation stops when the original clip hits its end frame (which is not being used in the timeline), and not when the hold frame ends. The only solution at the moment is to create a nest as @Ann Bens said, but I think that should be the way it has to be done, as a hold frame should work as a still frame.

PS: If we take the nestin out as a possible solution, I found more problems to this: as stated before, adding an effect kills the animation even if the keyframes are there. Also when moving the video image, its visual position is not accurate to it's real position in the frame. After positioning it needs to be repositioned again to fix this error.

Sorry, I forgot a word: ...but I think that should not be the way it has to be done, as a hold frame should work as a still frame.

Thanks for the info. I would then do the Nest as Ann suggested. It's a good option when you need something to be pre-processed, so the inside of the nest gets done first, then the things you might apply to the nest. Very similar to AE's pre-comps.

@Dani_V.

If you use a still you still have to nest if one wants to animate it as a whole.
