Locked tracks and layers cause major timeline lag

Community Beginner ,
Jun 28, 2023 Jun 28, 2023

I am running Premiere Pro 23.5 on Windows 11.  I have a Threadripper CPU, a 4080 GPU, 64 GB of RAM, and I use proxies.  I make 5 minute wedding videos with 2 songs on 2 seperate tracks and about 5 or 6 dialogue tracks.  Learning from my past mistakes, it is habit for me to lock all tracks and video layers I am not currently editing for risk of accidently deleting a major part or accidently moving a carefully edited song throwing off all the creatively edited music.  When tracks are locked, clicking around the timeline is delayed, zoom in and out of timeline is lagged, and during playback, the playhead stutters down the timeline even though the video playback itself is smooth.  It is frustrating to risk an accidental major mistake just to free up the editing process to be a smooth experience.  Any ideas?

Hi @Daniel33683666iwql,

Hi, I'm Kevin from support, one of the moderators here. Thanks for bumping the bug report. I didn't know that some people are still experiencing this bug. Which version are you using? If you have not updated yet, can you try that to see if you are clear of the issue? You can also check out the beta. Let me know if updating helps. If you are on 24.5 or the beta and seeing the problem, please let the team know. Sorry for the problem.

Take Care,

Kevin

You guys have used the word 'creative' more in two posts than, I have used in the last 3 weeks.

🙂

I haven't experienced that, but I do almost anything I can to 'free up the editing process to be a smooth experience.' That helps my uh...em... 'creat..' ah, nevermind.

What happens when you unlock the tracks all works well? What type of proxies are you using? I take it you use wav files rather than mp3's for the music?

Yep, same issue. Any day you devs wanna fix this... that'd be great. Locking all tracks and then unlocking one (for audio work, for example, so you can ripple trim), is a NIGHTMARE. It's like I'm running Windows 98.

Hi Kevin,

The Adobe version I’m using is 24.5. It’s worth noting this only happens when I’m using Premiere Pro on a Windows machine.

Thanks,
Daniel
