P: Middle mouse drag fails to work when video zoomed in Premiere Pro 25.2.3

Advocate ,
May 17, 2025 May 17, 2025

This issue was reported by several of my colleagues, and I checked it and can reproduce the bug.

Drag+middle mouse button is used for dragging your video in the Program monitor. When the zoom level is 100% or Fit it works alright, but when the image is zoomed in, the middle mouse button fails to grab the image on the first click but catches it on the second. If you change the zoom level again this behavior may repeat. I couldn't determine what exact zoom level causes it, but it's totally reproduciable. You can see it in this video, once the mouse pointer moves and the image stays in place - it's this bug.

-The mice buttons work properly

- It happens in any Premiere Pro where this feature with dragging is available

- Several users reported this issue so it's not machine-bound. Windows only.

- Happens with any media, on any sequence

Steps to reproduce: see the video, do the same - try dragging the video in the program monitor with the middle mouse button, changing the zoom levels with the scroll.

Hi @AndrewTheGreat - How have you been?
Thanks for submitting your bug report. I see this issue and will get a bug filed.

Repro Steps:

1. Switch to Hand Tool

2. Use your scroll wheel to zoom into the Program Monitor

3. Attempt to move the image with Hand Tool

Results:

Hand tool does not move the image

Workaround:

Use the Zoom level dropdown in the program monitor instead of the scroll wheel to zoom in

NOTE:

This happens on mac and windows in version 25.2

Sorry for the frustration.

  • Issue - Unable to use the hand tool in the Program panel
  • Steps to reproduce When in the Program panel, use the scroll wheel to zoom into the image, or use the dropdown. Middle mouse click to drage the image around the panel does not work. Using the Hand tool (keyboard shortcut H) also does not work.
  • Expected result - Image should move around the Program panel, enabling me to see a different area of my image at that point in time.
  • Actual result -  Image does not move. Zoom works, but cannot move image.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro version - 2025.2.3 (Build 4)
  • Operating system - MacOS Sequoia 15.5

This issue is affecting all of my projects, new or old. It started several weeks ago, but I'm not sure the exact date.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  • Open Premiere
  • Open a project
  • Using the mouse wheel, zoome in on the content displayed in the program panel.   Zoom amount does not matter.
  • Press H to enable the hand tool
  • Use the hand tool inside the program panel to move the content to a different area.
  • Nothing happens.   The content in the program panel does not move under the command of the hand tool.

WORKAROUND

Reset preferences in Premiere by relaunching Premiere and holding down the command key (Mac)
The hand tool will then work  temporarily

The hand tool will fail again once any preference is established in Premiere.  In this example, changing the playback resolution from (default) 1.2 to full will force the hand tool to be inoperable.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

The hand tool should work all the time, as it does during the temporary work around solution.  The expected functionality is not unlike that found in PS.

SEVERITY AND PRIORITY

Seeing as the hand tool is a primary tool on the tools panel, and working without it is quite disempowering, and this is directly contrary to the stated mission statement of Adobe, I would provide the opinion that this is a P1 in priority.    Speaking purely as a consumer and power user of Creative Suite, I find it very frustrating.

TIME TO RESOLVE

I can only go off of the forums posted here and on reddit, but it seems this bug has been active for three to four years.

PLATFORM AND VERSION

Premiere 25.2.3 (build 4)

Mac Studio 2023
Apple M2 Ultra Chip
Mac OS 15.4.1 (24E263)

On the Program Monitor you can zoom in, zoom out, and pan around using the middle mouse button. This feature is very convenient, but there’s an issue: when you zoom out and then try to pan by pressing the middle mouse button, it doesn’t respond on the first click - only on the second one. This makes the workflow slower and more complicated.

Hi Dav_But,

I tried this scenario and I am not seeing this issue. That is I can pan by pressing middle mouse button with first click itself. Can you please share the version of Premiere that you are facing the issue on? And which mouse are you using?

Thanks,

Vinayak

I just moved from 25.2 up to 25.4 and I'm finding all sorts of these little things that have become broken along the way. Sorry I'm on it today but they all need to be reviewed, mostly little things but they all add up and make a big difference in user experience.

In 25.2 I was able to use my middle mouse wheel to zoom in and out in the Program Monitor. This works as expected in 25.4.

However, after I finished zooming in or out, I would then always use Middle Mouse button 3 (for most users this is clicking in on the scrollwheel) to drag the frame around. So the operation looks like

Zoom in to something, miss the mark as is typical of zooming in

Mouse button 3 click and hold to drag the frame to where you want it to be

But not in 25.4 what happens is

Zoom in to something

Mouse button 3 click doesn't return a "hand tool", nothing happens

Mouse button 3 needs to be clicked again to register that you want to use it as the hand tool

So what this looks like in practical scenarios is that our learned muscle memory (and also this is just how After Effects works) is such that after I've zoomed in, I am not clicking Mouse 3 and moving my mouse quickly as if I am about to reposition, but since nothing happens, I've now inadvertently moved my mouse outside of the Program Monitor and need to return it to try again.

Pretty annoying.

I am seeing this too.

Also in the beta 25.6.50

Its intermittent.

The middle mouse does not give the hand too on the first click: have to press the middle mouse again. Even though PM is highlighted.

Have a little more info on this after a couple days in 25.4 and working as I typically would. There are two things I think are contributing to this:

1) There is a noticeable delay when doing anything in the source monitor in 25.4. If I transform a clip by dragging it around, or scaling it up, after releasing my click it's as if the Source Monitor is some milliseconds behind me because the clip will continue to move after I've released my click, thus the scale I intended or position I wanted is lost. I think that the delay is what is preventing the next click, mouse button 3, from working, since Source Monitor is still lingering on your last action for some delay of time.

2) That "delay" I mentioned is also in the timeline panel. There is now a noticeable delay in dragging clips around the timeline, almost as if it is always just a step behind your hand, whereas this was not happening in 25.2. Since then, you have added something new to the timeline such that when you click and drag clips out the waveforms are still seen, nice new change, but I have a feeling this and the source monitor delay are somehow connected. There's just an overall feeling of sluggishness to 25.4 that was not present in 25.2.

Here is a demo video of me trying to explain in situ:

LATEST
