Project Versions Causing Unexpected Crashes

Community Beginner ,
Apr 03, 2025 Apr 03, 2025

I'm facing a frustrating issue with Adobe Premiere Pro that I haven't encountered before, and I could really use some guidance. Recently, all saved versions of my project are causing Premiere Pro to quit abruptly without any error message, which is seriously impacting my ability to meet a looming deadline.

What I've Tried:

Restarted my computer multiple times.

Cleared the cache in Premiere Pro.

Completely reinstalled Premiere Pro.

Attempted to open different versions of the project files.

Despite these efforts, it seems like Premiere Pro might be struggling with the media contained within the saved versions, as creating a new project works fine.

If anyone has experienced this issue or has any suggestions on how to troubleshoot and resolve it, I would greatly appreciate your help. Time is of the essence, and I'm at a loss for what else to try. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hi @King-witch -  Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.
Please see, How do I write a bug report?

What type of media are you working with?

It sounds like maybe your project is corrupt.  Have you tried creating a new project and importing your sequence from your old project?

Are you using any effects, third party panels, or plugins?

Sorry for the frustration.

Projects can become corrupted. Which is why so many of us suggest a multi-step process for stand-alone project workflows.

Do manual saves of course every maybe 20 minutes, or anytime you finish any 'major' step.

Then every so many of those, do an iterative "Save-as" to a new project file name, maybe adding a date or number to the project name. And continue working in the new project.

For those who need to try to rescue something out of a corrupted project, create a new project file first.

Then, from inside that new project, go to the Media Browser panel. Select the old project file, and right-click/Import assets like sequences from that project file.

Do one sequence, see if it works correctly, then another.

Issue:
Premiere Pro crashes instantly when opening any saved version of my project, with no error message. This issue prevents me from accessing my work and meeting my deadline.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Launch Adobe Premiere Pro.

  2. Open any previously saved version of my project.

  3. Wait a few seconds—Premiere Pro quits unexpectedly without an error message.

Expected Result:
The project should open normally, allowing me to continue editing.

Actual Result:
Premiere Pro closes abruptly with no warning or error message. When attempting to upload the project from a new file, the timeline and all my edits are completely gone.

Adobe Premiere Pro Version:
25.2 (most recent version). I've also tried using older versions, but the issue persists.

Operating System:
Microsoft Windows 11 Home, Version 10.0.26100

Video Format:
1920x1080 resolution, approximately 1-2 minutes of editing.

Hardware Specifications:

  • CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz

  • RAM: 32.0 GB

  • Storage: SSD - 953.9 GB, SSD - 931.5 GB

  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650

    • CUDA Cores: 1024

    • Graphics Clock: 1560 MHz

    • Dedicated Video Memory: 4096 MB GDDR5

    • Memory Bandwidth: 128.032 GB/s

    • Driver: Studio Driver - 566.14 (Tue Nov 12, 2024)

    • DirectX Runtime Version: DirectX 12

  • Display: HUION, 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz

What I've Tried:

  • Restarted my computer multiple times.

  • Cleared Premiere Pro’s cache.

  • Completely reinstalled Premiere Pro.

  • Attempted to open different versions of the project files.

  • Used both the latest version and older versions of Premiere Pro to try to fix the issue.

Additional Notes:

  • I do not have any additional plugins or panels installed.

  • The only effects used in the project were standard position movement and scaling within Premiere.

  • Creating a new project works fine, suggesting an issue with the existing project files rather than the software itself.

    Hope that helps

Have you imported a sequence into a new project, by itself, to test?

I've done this a few times and tried saving the timeline specifically and pasting that,
It is the timeline specifically that is crashing Premiere, like all the media works fine taking it from the orginal file! It does not want that timeline/ sequence. Once I copy paste it (taking it from the original file right before it quits on me) it shuts down the program....

That's not what I was suggesting.

I had specific steps listed. Import the sequence, don't copy/paste.

If you can Import the media and work with it in a new project, then it's probably not the media.

If you import the sequence into a new project and it doesn't work, the sequence data is corrupt.

If you can Import the sequence and it works, the project file is corrupt.

Yes, the sequences never show up no matter what after importing the project into a new file. it gives me all the media but does not give me the sequence, so I tried to copy paste the sequence in

And then when I do copy and paste it in that’s what causes it to crash, so it seems like the sequence data is the issue

When you right-click the project file, you should be able to Import single sequences, not the entire project file.

Hi @King-witch - It looks like the latest gpu driver is 572.83.  Can you try updating and let us know if that helps your issue.

You could also export an XML of your sequence then create a new project and import the XML.

That's the highest and most updated driver I can access atm! And I did export the XML sequence and trying to import it won't register it at all, Like it acts like I didn't do anything

Hi @King-witch - Can you try and save 2 minute sections of your sequence in separate projects and then open each project that will help you figure out which section is causing the issues.
