Proxy workflow slowdown (with a lots of small files) in the recent versions.

Hi!

Proxy scrubbing performance tends to struggle when there are many short clips on the timeline, each sourced from a unique file.
This slowdown wasn’t present in earlier versions (2024 ones, perhaps?).

The only workaround I’ve found is to make the original files Offline, so Premiere doesn’t read them (for unknown reason) while displaying the proxies.
However, this is a hassle because relinking the original files (to render a high-quality output) usually takes some time.

My Premiere version is up to date: 25.2.3.

Hi @V-Edit -  Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.
Please see, How do I write a bug report?

It sounds like even though you have the proxy button "on" in Premiere Pro,  your system feels like it is using the original footage.  Does that sound correct?

Can you right click on your media files and select "Media File Properties". Then post a screenshot.

Sorry for the frustration.

I really want to solve this issue because manually taking the original (full-resolution) media offline is not an ideal solution. According to the network monitor, network usage is around 20 Mbit/s when proxies are enabled. However, when there are many small files (around 30–50 video files), the network usage spikes to 600–700 Mbit/s, and scrubbing starts to lag—just like when proxies are disabled.

If I take all the original files offline, it resolves the issue completely. Timeline scrubbing becomes smooth as butter, even with hundreds of small files, making editing a pleasant experience—just like it always was until recently. My system is very fast: i7-13700K, RTX3090 24GB, 10GBit/s LAN, NVMe disks on the server side and locally.

Hi @V-Edit - Your media is on Network storage?  I Just want to confirm that you do have the Proxy button enabled? Would you be able to post a screen recording?

Yes, both media and proxy are on local network. (tried also all from local NVMe - same problem) I confirm that that proxy are enabled. Here is the video: https://youtu.be/861mUr_pufk

Sure, I’ll send a sample project to your email now. I’ve noticed that the original files scrub even slightly faster than the proxy + original combination in proxy viewing mode.

The link has been sent with some sample footage and ProRes 720p proxies. Please let me know your findings.
