I agree, I see this as a new problem I hadn't ever seen before, SONER.   I keep testing things and it just seems completely hopeless, and I cannot find a clear association with a cause.   BUT, I am starting to feel that at least some of it is to do with the caption track.   I'm working on a feature doc that is entirely subtitled.   Just now, I rendered the entire film (90 min feature).   I fixed a typo I noticed in one subtitle, and of course it turned from green to yellow.   I hit option-R to render again, and 721 video previews needed to be rendered again throughout the entire film, not one, as would be expected.

That said, I have seen six projects in my Production lose ALL their renders since two days ago, when I rendered every single sequence fully.   And many of those sequences had no caption tracks.   So it's not just the caption track.

it's never easy to diagnose problems from a distance...  and gotta say never occured to me to ask if you were dealing with a "production" and captions...  Both of which may be contributing to the issue..   Wondering if the workaround is to create lower resolution proxies in an all iframe format like prores so you can play and edit without rendering...   Personally I haven't worked with productions, but have been doing some research as I'm wrangling a large documentary project with extensive multicamera 4k interviews (thankfully all in English). .    I know workarounds are not ideal, but sometimes it allows you to get the job done.  In my experience, Premiere does a great job with medium and low resolution prores proxies...

What pixel dimensions?  If you use the low or medium res prores proxy preset, it won't play without rendering?

They range from 1080 to 720, all ProRes Proxy.

Have you tried lowering the program monitor resolution to 1/2 or 1/4?  I'm not seeing any issue playing back 2 and 3 camera multicam material in proxy mode on a decent 3 or 4 year old intel imac...    no captions though.

Yes indeed, to no avail.   The reason I'm having to render is because I am having tremendous problems with the entire project which includes huge amounts of VFR phone footage (now converted to CFR ProRes Proxy), which seems to be presenting an infinite variety of other dreadful performance problems, discussed in other threads.   But I'm trying to keep this thread focused on the disappearing renders - they should have nothing to do with those issues, as everything is 1080 or lower ProRes Proxy, and once it's rendered, it's literally new media - the fact that they disappear can't really have anything to do with what they started as, can it?   And yet they disappear, constantly, and almost immediately.

I'm mystified, but wondering if I'm missing something here...  Wondering if you can copy a sequence into a new free-standing project (rather than a production) and see if you still see this behavior?    And phone footage once transcoded to cfr prores proxy shouldn't be causing any issues...    Would you be willing to spend some time zooming so I can take a gander at your project and see if anything's jumping out at me...  You can send me a direct message by clicking on my username at the top of any of my posts...  Kind of overwhelmed with a couple of projects right now, but could probably squeeze some time in...

Just a random thought:  what's your preview format in your sequence settings?  sorry if you've already said it in this thread.  It's getting late here in NYC...

I've tried both copying and moving my project into both free-standing projects, and new empty projects within the Production, to no effect.  Preview format renders are 1080 ProRes Proxy.   Thanks for trying to help!

I'm in a spotting session this morning and rendered the entire timeline beforehand.  WHILE PLAYING, renders were disappearing - without closing the sequence or quitting Premiere, doing nothing other than playing and stopping.

I see you think this might be an issue with a caption track?  What if you just export the timeline without the captions to a "mezzanine" format like prores lt or proxy and spot and edit captions in a timeline with just the export in the video track...  Easy enough to copy the finished caption track back to your edit sequence if necessary...    Not ideal, but might help you get over the hump.  Premiere has done a great job updating the caption workflow, but it can still be a bear.  Recently finished supervising the restoration of a documentary from the 80's and the client was so obsessive about the captions, it made me crazy.

Not sure how the render and replace workflow would work with captions, but might be worth a shot...

This is not a new problem. It goes back a few years at least.

Michael, when I came onto this project (I'm the third editor), I was so unhappy with the performance and converted all the subtitles (Caption Track) to text instead.  Made no difference.   But I never spent long enough with that solution to see if the renders disappeared under those conditions.   On another note, I changed my render format to I-MPEG, also to no effect.

I am more and more of the opinion that all of my troubles spring from the combo of caption tracks and VFR phone footage - I think both are in play somehow.

I will concur that caption tracks (subtitles) are a part of the bug. Less convinced formats/codecs matter - all my issues have been with ProRes media (often including prores render files too).
