2023 M2 Max GPU - no being used for simple motion on still image (scale & position)

Hi community,

I'm using PP2024 version 24.0.0 (build 58) on a 2023 MacBook Pro M2 Max

I have a still image on my timeline, that I'm giving some life to through animating scale & position. These are simple graphic interpolation tasks, so I just can't understand how PP isn't utilizing the GPU.

[To rule out that it has to do with project settings, I've checked them. Like all PP24 on Apple Silicon, it's locked to "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Metal)"]

Here's a screenshot from my 'Effect controls' panel - you can see that no effects are applied, other than the basic 'Motion':

And here it is with the keyframes:

I'd appreciate any assistance.

@renvapo How do you know the GPU isn't being used?

Dear @mattchristensen,

Thank you so much for your prompt response!

I check the activity monitor as a regular practice during render jobs. E.g. I know that stabilizing footage is CPU-based, and that's frustrating but understandable.

In this instance, I selected only the still image, which was "red" on my timeline. And used "Render selection" to check the CPU/GPU deployment during that job. The activity monitor shows around 1,100 %CPU and virtually no %GPU.

BTW, my sequence setting for preview files are ProRes 422 LT. I check the issue both with "Maximum render quality" checked, and with it unchecked. In both cases it's ~ 1,100% CPU and no GPU.

Many thx

@renvapo Thanks for that additional information. There are some situations where behind the scenes the rendering engine may fall back to CPU usage. I'm wondering what the pixel dimmensions of your image(s) are, what bit depth, etc. Would you be willing to share a sample along with a project? It may be that because of the image size we are falling back to CPU processing.
