Adobe Premiere changing my Audio Hardware Preferences on its own

New Here ,

This is an issue I've been having with Adobe Premiere 2023 that is related to some FAQs I've found online but much more complex.

My usual Audio Hardware Preferences in Premiere have been "Device Class: MME / Default Output: System Default - Speakers (2 - Realtek(R) Audio) / Sample Rate: 44100 Hz" however one day, the audio playback just stopped. I could play video in Premiere but would hear nothing. After trying to determine whether this was a problem with my system or Premiere itself, I deduced I had to change the Device Class from MME to ASIO. However, what would now occasionally happen is that both audio AND video playback would stop. I would press spacebar and the play icon would change to a square, but the video wouldn't move and there was no sound, and when checking the Audio Hardware Preferences, I saw that the Sample Rate under the ASIO Device Class I had set was now at 0 Hz, and there was no option in that menu to change it. Through trial and error, the only solution to this I've found is that whenever this happens: I need to switch Device Class back to MME, play a few seconds of silent playback, then immediately switch Device Class back to ASIO which would automaticallu have Sample Rate back at 44100 Hz, ticking the "Attempt to force hardware to document sample rate" box as well. Going into Speaker Properties and unticking the "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" box makes this process impossible despite what I thought.

However that is not the only disruption to my editing work I have been facing: sometimes the above method does not even work and when that happens, the only solition has been to "Troubleshoot Device Properties" for the Realtek speakers in Settings, click "Open Audio Enhancements" when prompted, then wait a second or so for the "Troubleshooting" to end for it to inevitably say "Problems found - Audio Format not set to default - Fixed." However, in audio enhancements, I find that the 44100 Hz setting my Realtek speakers should be at has now changed to 48000 Hz, and I need to change it back.

Meanwhile in Audition 2023, no such issue exists. And in fact when swapping between Premiere and After Effects I've had to keep changing the device back and forth between MME and ASIO just for the sake of hearing anything in either program.

Another thing I found through trial and error is that it became impossible for me to play audio in Premiere AND a different source like YouTube on my Internet browser or a video file in VLC. It would only ever be one or the other, and in fact, playing audio from a source like that is often what causes the playback with the ASIO Device Class to completely stop, requiring the process of briefly switching back to MME to play a few seconds of silence then switch back to ASIO.

Contacting Adobe Care on Twitter, they seemed to think this had something to do with my other audio drivers, such as the one for my Audient iD4 interface, however I don't have that device connected to my computer 90% of the time when editing and in any case, have had that driver installed long before this issue started. No, this was not a case with just one project file, it happens on all project files with all kinds of audio and video assets. Yes, all my audio drivers have been updated to their latest versions, and uninstalling/reinstalling Premiere/my audio drivers has done nothing.

A recent fix I found in these troubles is going into Speaker Properties for my default Realtek Speaker device and ticking the "Give exclusive mode applications priority" box. Doing so is currently alloing things to proceed smoothly on Premiere with the ASIO Device Class, but still does not allow me to play audio from some other application simultaneously, so not everything is back to how it used to be and I don't know if even this slight fix will last.

One thing potentially worth noting is that before this issue kicked off I did have a problem with additional audio popping noises coming from exported files that didn't exist in the timeline. I think it had something to do with 44100 Hz audio versus 48000 Hz audio settings at some point in Premiere (whether it was the sequence settings, output settings or what have you) but soon after that, the above issue began.

This issue has been incredibly tedious to my video editing process and I just wish there was a way to revert things back to how they were before where I could play audio from a different application and not have to constantly fiddle with my Audio Hardware Preferences. Is this an issue with my system or is it with Premiere/is it possible to fix this?

Hi Abhimany,
I have not heard back from you with the system and media details. Do you have them for the devs so they can try and repeat the issue? They do require info to assist. Sorry for the hassle.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello @abhimanyuk90156280,

Thanks for the message. I apologize for the lack of response to this bug report. Are you still having this issue? The team will need more info from you to reproduce the bug. Can you provide the information required here? How do I write a bug report?

I'll move your post to the Discussions board while we await your information.

Thanks,

Kevin
