Artifacts on Miraizon ProRes 4444 files with alpha channels

Hi all,

 

I've run into severe artifacting when using some videos with an alpha channel that are encoded as Miraizon ProRes 4444 (not a codec I would choose myself but it seems popular in certain stock graphic libraries).  Sorry, I know it's probably a very niche issue but it's been a wrinkle in our workflow recently.

 

Issue: Large, black, blocky artifacts on playback.

Premiere Pro Version: 23.3.0 (I also tested it on the 23.5.0 beta and the issue was present there as well - but I went back and confirmed that these files playback fine in 22.5.0).

Operating system: Windows 11 (22H2, 22621.1702)

System Info:

  • AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X 32-Core 3.69 ghz
  • AMD 6900 XT (Driver 23.4.3 - also tested on 23.4.2)
  • 128 GB RAM

 

Additional info:

  • Collaborators working in the same version of Premiere on Apple M1 machines haven't been running into this issue with the same footage.
  • Re-transcoding to normal ProRes 4444 using Media Encoder just bakes in the artifacting.
  • Initially the artifacts didn't appear when the video was paused and only appeared after pressing play (both in the source monitor and the program monitor).
  • Switching the renderer to "Software Only" did not fix the issue.
  • Unchecking "Composite in Linear Color" didn ot fix the issue. Interestingly after re-checking this the artifacts started appearing when the video was paused as well, which wasn't the case before.
  • These artifacts also appear in the corresponding version of After Effects.
  • These artifacts don't appear in any non-Adobe software - it plays fine in Resolve and in the end my workaround is just to re-transcode using Shutter Encoder.

Oh I also confirmed that interpreting the alpha channel differently did not help.

@artofwot I recommend using the built-in Prores encoding that comes standard with Premiere Pro.  Prores encoding has been available natively on Windows for a few years now, so there really is no reason to use Miraizon anymore.

I would never choose to use Miraizon but some of the graphics we get from third party stock footage and graphics sites are encoded with it.

The biggest issue is that it's functionoing fine on some machines (M1 macs), but when I go to do exports on sequences that were working fine on their machines I get artifacting on my machine.

This is a new issue as of recent versions.

Having the same issue and it just cropped up in the summer and is still present in version 2004. Very frustrating because this same file was accessed in April of 2023 and had no issues with the alpha channel of some stock video footage, but now it has blocky, black artifacts on the alpha channels. No way to remove. I'm reverting to a prior version until Adobe fixes.

@Shauna267891719kk3 My workaround is to re-transcode the files with Shutter Encoder (it's free) when I notice the artifacts. Media Encoder just bakes the artifacts in.

Sorry, to clarify I am using Premier Pro version 24.1 and the artifacts are present, making this footage completely unusable and I just attempted to download a prior version to version 23.3.0 which you said is where you first discovered the problem, but versions prior are no longer available for download. Not sure what to do now but I'm going to have to find new footage since Premier just made this footage unusable.

Drop the file in to Shutter Encoder and under "choose function"  choose Editing Codecs - Apple ProRes - and then 4444. Then hit "Start Function"

 

It's a bummer that it used to work and now requires an extra step but that workaround should work.
