If you don't give full specifics we can only guess.

So what are the audio default settings for on import, use file or whatever?

What's your media? Stereo, dual mono, multiple channels, what?

Have you done any channel mapping?

Is it stereo? Two mono channels? Duo mono? What?

And your Audio Preferences, what are they set for?

Stereo, mono, from file?

And what is the sequence audio? Of the current sequence.

Stereo is where you have a left and right signal, like a music cd. This will often impoet as a single track but showing left and right waveforms.

Mono is the same as stero but with the same signal on both the left and right, this will play out of both speakers.

Dual mono is where the left and right are different, often a boom mic on one chasnnel and personal mics on the other. With out changing any settings the boom will be from one speaker and the personals from the other. More often than not dual mon would be split out to twn distinct mono tracks, this will let you use the track pan pots to make the audio come from both speakers.

To add a bit to Richard's comments, most high-end pro sound design works with dual mono, rarely with stereo, on the timeline/sequence.

So track 1 is left, 2 is right, and on down. And again, panning is used to set the "location" of the sound in the mix.

They'll have quite a few paired tracks in the mixing process, then sent via controls of the software to a grouped submix, so say vocals are on sub 1, guitars sub 2, drums sub 3, and finally to final output channels.

The output may be in stereo, but ... while working, it's dual mono.
