Audio vanishes from video clips when dragged into the timeline

I created a new project, imported my first video clip, dragged it into the timeline and trimmed it. Next I imported several more clips from the same shoot. When I tried to drag those clips into the timeline, there is no audio track, only a video track. Yet when I play those clips in the upper left window, the audio is heard loud and clear. (See photo of my timeline)

What happened? Why did the first clip go into the timeline with its audio tracks as expected, but the process cannot be repeated with subsequent clips?

Pardon my basic questions. I haven't worked in a version of Premiere newer than 2015 until now.

Also, I would like to use the 'elements' interface that I have read about. Is it possible to change the interface after a project is already in progress?
