black screen only on second playback? macbook premiere

plenty of ram and disk space.

after first playback, view window remains black,

I can switch the engine from software to gpu or opengl and it renders again, but only once and then a black screen again,

We have tinkered a little with the scratch disk settings, and noticed that premiere allows an option to restrict gb used for other programs, but not sure if that is relative to the issue being that the first play through works great.
