Blending motion graphic with footage

New Here ,
Jul 29, 2024 Jul 29, 2024

hi guys,

I've got a motion graphic that has a section in it that fades from white to black. I'm trying to lay this over a piece of footage so that as the graphic fades from white to black, the footage underneath fades in, but I cant figure out white tool would be best to use as I dont want to key out the area (there is a logo that remains in the area while the colour is fading)

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Claudia,

Is the motion graphic something created in Premiere or is it a video file?

Can you share a screenshot of it?

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul, Thanks so much for your response, really stumped with this one!

I've attached some images (grey square over logo) so you can see the section im talking about. Basically as the graphic fades from white to black, the footage underneath should fade onto the screen (as if its acutally going from white to transparent, and the footage beneath fades in).

As a temporary fix, I just keyed out the colours in the gradient and did a did to white on the footage beneath, which was time consuming and isnt a long-term solution.

Do you know if there's a better way to do this so that white to black becomes white to transparent instead?

To blend your motion graphic with the footage, you can use masking and blend modes. Here are the steps:

  1. Create a mask around the non-white area of your motion graphic with the Opacity controls in the Effect Controls panel.
  2. Duplicate the clip to another track.
  3. On the duplicated clip, invert the mask by clicking the Invert option in the Effect Controls panel.
  4. Set the Opacity Blend Mode to Lighten or Screen to blend the dark areas of the motion graphic with the footage underneath.

Cheers,
Paul
