Can you copy/paste between PP versions?

Hello,

I have timeline footage in a newer version of PP that I need to use in an older version of PP. Basically I want to copy and paste from my timeline in 2023 and paste in 2019. Is this possible?

Reason being is that my color is all off based on the new version post 2020.

Is there anyway to do this to keep the raw clip settings?

Thank you!

Probably not. There are other ways to move timelines/clips between versions and software, though, such as an XML.

Have you tried to figure out what is going on with your color in the new version? What is going on with the color? What kind of media are you using?

Hi Phil,

Yea according to the Adobe support here, the color tech has changed over
new versions and the project opens different color wise in new versions.

There must be a way!!

The way they handle color spaces has certainly changed/improved over time, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can't achieve the same or similar results. But I don't know what kind of situation we're talking about here and how nuanced it is. If it's the fact that you are recording HDR content and now Premiere actually recognizes and treats it like HDR rather than automatically adjusting the color space to Rec709, then that's just something to quickly learn, rather than go back to an older version. And it also seems like going back to an old version would eventually be unteneable, since they fall out of support.

Unfortunately that’s not the case here. The LUTS I’m using are off of
Sony’s website and are slog 3. I graded my entire film with them.

When I use these same luts in PP later versions they look
totally different. Even when I fiddle around and change the color
management to rec703 it still is funky.

Also, the new version defaults to use a Creative LUT (one of the Fuji cool
blues) which also throws the color off unless I change it to none.

This whole thing is a nightmare and I don’t know what to do.

They don't default to something like the Fuji cool blues if you mean the ones shipped with it.

So ... where are you putting your LUTs? I hope NOT in with the ones that comes with Premiere, that is bad, bad, bad in so many ways.

For S-log-3 Sony media, you need to apply the Override-To  set to Rec.709 in the project bin. And then you can apply the LUT in Lumetri.

But you might also try using the S-log3 LUT you've got applied in the Input LUT slot in that Interpret Footage dialog CM settings, and at the bottom, also set the Override-To option mentioned above to Rec.709.

Hi Phillip,

If I make an XML file will it take all the alterable effects in the clips in Premiere (eg. a Lumetri color effect) and transfer them over? Or will the files be baked with the color?

Thanks!

An XML file is an html type file. It's just metadata about what to do to the clips listed.

And it lists the clips by timecode down the sequence. So the clips aren't changed, only referenced.

When you load the XML, then you have to import the media.

Hi Neil,

So when I load the clip via XML into the new timeline will the effect specs
show up? (Eg. the lumetri effect tab with all my adjustments ). The clip
won’t be baked with the color that was added in the former timeline?

Thanks,

Steven

XMLs don't necessarily carry all the data like that ... it's an exchange format for working between apps. Tends to do ok with clip in/out/location on timline. A few 'major' things like resizing and some retiming.

May not carry the color data.

Hi Neil,

May not? So it might? Is it that not a yes or no thing?

The LUTs I dropped using the method you offered didn’t work at all in my
PP. They showed up as my Luts in Lumetri, but when I applied them in the
clip nothing happened.

They only work when I dropped the raw Lut in the method I originally had
done, which was directly in the Lumetri “Luts” folder in the Premiere
package folder.

Not exactly sure what to do within premiere 2023, as the color is totally
different using these Sony slog3 Luts.

Something is wrong in your setup somewhere if that location didn't work. NO clue why but that's unfortunate.

XMLs can carry some color over ... color wheels perhaps. You'd have to test.
