Can you create a template project with a Production?

I recently switched to using Productions for all my PP work. But I've discovered what I think is a hitch. Perhaps someone with more experience in Productions can chime in. If I use a template project in Productions, and then rename it using Save As to create a new project (which was my old workflow before Productions), Premiere does not seem to create a unique ID. Instead it comes up with this annoying duplicate project message (which is important for tracking media apparently.)

Is there any way around this? Or am I using the wrong method?

Hi John,

I believe you have to add a template project differently according to the PDF, which you can find here. As I understand it, I think it's best if you create the template project outside of the Production and then add it to the Production. Check out the guide and come back with any questions if you don't mind.

Ok, thanks Kevin for providing that document - some of my projects come to me externally so it seems like you have to use "Add project to production" command and "Save a copy" if you want to duplicate a project within a production. Save as does not create a unique ID, which I think is an oversight, but then the 2 commands, while not identical, do seem to achieve exactly the same outcome (provided your original project is saved before using).

The use of "save as ..." is most typically used to create an iterative copy, where you stop working in the older version and continue in the new version of the project.

It has also been used of course for templated project files, as you have noted. So have I.

But the templates need to be stored "outside" the Production from all I can figure out, then added to the Production when you make them.

Unless @Bruce Bullis has a better suggestiong?
