Channel Mixer - Same settings different results

Community Beginner ,
Jan 31, 2024 Jan 31, 2024

The image below is using the Channel Mixer in Premiere 2017 vs 2024

The channel mixer settings are the same but why are the results so different? Is this a bug? (After Effects 2024, colour mixer produces the same effects as Premiere 2017)

This version of Premiere is 24.1.0 (build 85) on Windows 11

Best is to use Lumetri. Channel Mixer is an obsolete effect.

Ok, cool. I can make a LUT and load it through Lumetri. That works!

I work for/with/teach pro colorists, and have been working between Adobe apps and Resolve for over a decade. The colorists I work with did not ever trust the Channel Mixer's math. That effect, and a couple other of the "obsolete" color effects, could be made to break an image pretty easily.

So I'm with Ann. It's in the "obsolete" bin for a reason, a very good reason.

I do wish we had a good replacement for it though. Ah well.

Thanks for the added info, I hadn't seen it was in the obsolete bin, as I was just loading it from an older project.

Using the colour mixer in Photoshop and then exporting that as a LUT and importing that into Lumetri works for my project, but it's not exactly a simple process.

I hear you on that. Lumetri is actually pretty capable of most things .... after you truly understand how every control works.

Many controls do not do what people assume in the way they work. And you have to test using the scopes to do so, preferably with a test image that shows precise tonal levels and is neutral in tone so you can see exactly where and how they affect the image.

Once you've gotten an understanding, I can teach how to accomplish most  things that people would do in Resolve within Lumetri.

But there are some tools lacking ... such as a good channel mixer. And yes, that ...is a pain to use either Photoshop or AfterEffects. I run to AE personally if I need something like that.

Ah yes I see AE has the channel mixer. It seems odd that it's not obsolete there too but I'm happy to use it.

I work for an equid welfare charity and I'm attempting to recreate the dichromatic colour range. I'd ideally do this as scientifically as possible but at the moment it's more on the creative side.

HI @Richard3347844703cu,

I read about your problem. For any Premiere Pro effects which are obsolete, you can always see if the effect is still in After Effects. If so, you can create a .mogrt featuring the effect with a replaceable media option. Info here: https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/replace-media-motion-graphics-templates.html. I hope the idea makes sense and might be easier to use moving forward. Take care.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks for your help Kevin, I haven't heard of mogrt before, this is something I'll have to look into and test out.

Thanks for your help!

An intriguiging use of the mogrt ecosystem ... perhaps not originally imagined, but still, a very useful tool it seems ...
