Currently having issues playing anything in premiere.

stuttery playback and audio regardless of format. i.e. have tried with mp4, mxf, prores, proxies, mp3 and wav files all of which playback just under full speed and stutters.

this is from both external hard drives (magnetic disk and SSD) as well as internal hard drives (M2 drive + magnetic drive)

I have updated windows, all adobe apps, Nvidia studio drivers

have tried uninstalling and re-installing prem. have also tried an earlier version.

I've tried disabling my security software (sometimes that can interfere with other programs although I've not heard or ever had issue with it interfering with adobe software)

cleared cache.

playback is fine from After Effects.

other than factory reset the PC (which I ideally don't want to do) I have no idea what to try

Lots of things to try, but it's not always easy to diagnose these issues from a distance.  Please answer these questions, and try these suggestions in a systematic fashion...

what are your source properties and sequence settings?  pixel dimensions, frame rate, etc.

What are your preview settings in sequence settings?  and have you tried rendering?

you might try changing the renderer in project settings to "software."

How many monitors do you have connected?  Multiple monitors can cause playback issues..  If you have more than one monitor connected, try disconnecting everything but the primary monitor...   Do you have any other programs running at the same time?  If so, try quitting them...  And you might try creating another user account with. administrator privileges and see if that helps.   And do you have any peripherals connected besides mouse, keyboard and media drives?  If so, try disconnecting them.

I think it may have been a webcam being plugged in..... odd that it has been in for years and hasn't thrown up an issue before!
