Clip audio distorted/robotic when placed in timeline

Having a strange problem where source monitor clips sound normal but when placed in a timeline they are distorted/sound robotic. Also, there's suddenly a new column on the timeline in the audio section, a number to the right of the mic icon, that I'm sure has something to do with it. It happened in a project I've been using for the last month, so I'm certain I've switched something on with an errant keyboard shortcut to make it suddenly start doing this, but I can't figure out what!

My work around has been to Create Sequence from Clip, Add A Track to the audio in the sequence (standard track which does not include the "4" next to the mic icon), pull Audio Only from the source monitor into the standard track, delete all the other audio tracks.

Nothing seems amiss in my sequence settings. Anybody know how to fix this?
