Color Distortion - Iphone Videos

Community Beginner ,

Dear all,

I tried to import on a new projects some videos filmed with my I-Phone 13 pro but something bad occurred. On both my phone and computer (Macbook Pro) these video look very beautiful, but when I import those videos on a new project on Premiere Pro (latest version) the colour of the videos change. On both the project and the output video the colours look very bright and the light colours tend to be yellow. I don't understand where this colour distortion comes from.

Beforse downloading the latest Premier pro version I used the 2020 version and with this version the colours of the videos imported in the project were identical to the ones seen on my pc and phones.

Could you please help me?

The 2021and prior Pr versions were completely hard-coded Rec.709 apps. So anything brought into the app was transformed/displayed in Rec.709/sRGB except for if you carefully set it to HLG or PQ.

With the release of the 2022 series just over a year ago, they changed the underlying system completely. It is now color - space agnostic as an app, and you, the user, MUST take control. Which is why PeruBob gave the link above.

At this time, HDR ... no matter whether HLG or PQ ... is the Wild Wild West. Most screens do not handle it correctly if at all. Some Macs have beautiful handling for HLG media, many still don't, and outside of those, all even "HDR capable" monitors and TVs mess with the signal.

Why? ABL ... auto brightness limiting. It's a protection against burn-in of stationary bright pixels. And begins within about 30 seconds or a minute at most of a stationary signal, of most any brightness.

And that's just the first thing ... they also will all do things to "enhance the viewing experience" which you cannot predict. So producing HDR content is well ... unpredictable at best as far as what each viewer will actually see.

So for now, you might turn off the HLG/HDR in your iPhone.

For working with HLG media in Pr 2023 for 'standard' Rec.709 exports, do the following:

  • Select one or more clips in the Project panel, right-click/Modify/Interpret Footage.
  • Set the bottom Override-To option to Rec.709.
  • Make sure your Sequence color working space (Sequence menu) is set to Rec.709.
  • Make sure that Display Color Management in the prefs is "on" on any Mac, and most PCs unless you have calibrated and profiled that system in separate steps for Rec.709 or hired a professional to come in and calibrate/profile that system for you.
  • Make sure that any export preset you use does NOT have HLG or PQ in the  preset name.
