I don't have very up-to-date equipment and I made a 1/4 ProRes proxy for the original 4k clips. But despite this, the playback was terrible, it was actually like a slideshow. Desperate, I started rummaging through the software monitor settings, I turned on HQ playback and suddenly a miracle happened - smooth playback returned. I couldn't believe my eyes and turned off the HQ playback back and saw the slideshow again.
This illogical circumstance cost me a lot of time and nerves.

The different settings can be so confusing. In truth, from over a decade of heavy use, there's a lot of things that depending on your gear/media/workflow ... will work differently than for anyone else.
So "poking the box" is absolutely required. And on poking the box thoroughly, you will find things often are different than you expected. And work better ... or not.
Which you can use to get a more advanced/faster/whatever workflow.
And then, just when you think you've got it! ... they change something, and you need to relearn a part of what you knew. But it normally does get better.
