My install crashes every time I try to open a certain type of AVI file.
Adobe support says I need to use handbrake to transcode the file to one that Premiere can open.
Adobe refuses to do any more work saying they resolved the problem.
I do not think this an acceptable solution to the problem.

Change your AVI to .MPEG and see how that works. I literally just helped a friend with this exact problem a few days ago in person. Worked like a champ.

Mac or windows.
Which Premiere build (not just 2018 or latest)
What kind of avi. Avi is just a container, what codec is inside.

The thing I don't understand is why Adobe not interested in solving this issue?
Is a workaround a solution?
Just looking at a folder containing this file in media browser crashes premier.
Crashing a system is bad for the computer not to mention I lose any rendering in progress etc.
It seems to me they would want to fix this problem?
I'm on Premier version 12.01 (Build 69) Windows
The crash issue has been following me for a number of releases.
The crash occurs when I try to open video created by Keyshot a 3d rendering application.
I now transcode all video from Keyshot but do not think it is a good solution.
The codec looks like this:
Codec: MPEG-4 Video (FMP4)
Type: video
Video resolution 1920x1281
Buffer dimensions: 1920x1312
Frame rate: 30
Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV
orientation: Top Left
Chroma location: Left
Generated by Keyshot
No audio.
I can send files that crash system.
I cannot test now as a render is in progress form Keyshot.
I cannot risk a crash.

There are definitely other concerns as you point out that Adobe will hopefully address.
My suggestion was in hopes of just getting you back to work at least.

Sorry about this frustrating issue. Can you please add your voice to this bug? Support AVI files needed in newest release... URGENT – Adobe video & audio apps
I'll investigate and see if I can find a better workaround for you from a support perspective.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Jonathan Schipper,
Are you on Mac or PC?
Thanks,

You're using media that is not currently supported by your software (and is unlikely to ever be). You have two options.
1. Use different media.
2. Use different software.
It really is that simple.

Or downloading Handbrake...

That would be a valid path to Option 1.

I would still try the extension change from avi to mpeg. I just did this a few days ago and it worked beautifully.

Kirk,
I tried changing the extension it does not seem to work.
Thank you.
Jim,
If Adobe decides not to support a format that is disappointing but understandable.
The tech I spoke to said they did support it but it was just failing for some reason.
Please understand that Premiere is crashing my system. It is my opinion that software should not crash a system.
Maybe I'm the only one experiencing the problem but I pay my subscription and I feel the software should not crash my computer just because it cannot read a format. Other software reads the format just fine.

Sorry that didnt work. Was worth a try.
I guess you have to convert it. Now, the issue I was seeing wasn't crashing premiere, it simply wouldn't recognize the file.

Adobe's "tech" support isn't always...good.

I'm seeing the same behavior now with a .MP4 file.
Both files come from Keyshot so I will talk with them but I think it's pretty crazy that it crashes my entire computer.
Windows 10 has been pretty stable for me. In this case, the screen goes blank and the system totally locks up.

I would recommend a higher quality export from Keyshot. Cineform, DNx, ProRes, DPX, EXR...something professional.
MP4 is consumer stuff best avoided except for final delivery.
