Dynamic Link Error – “Importer Reported a Generic Error” When Using Built-in Premiere Effects

Community Beginner ,

Dear Adobe Team,

I’d like to report an issue with the Dynamic Link functionality between Premiere Pro and After Effects.

When I attempt to use the "Replace with After Effects Composition" feature on a clip that has a built-in Premiere Pro effect applied — specifically the Crop effect — the import fails and I receive the following error message:
“Importer reported a generic error.”

This is quite frustrating, especially considering that both Premiere Pro and After Effects are Adobe products and are expected to work seamlessly together. A built-in effect like Crop should not break the Dynamic Link functionality.

Ideally, if an effect is not fully supported in the Dynamic Link process, the system should still allow the clip to be transferred to After Effects — even if the effect is temporarily ignored — rather than causing a complete failure.

I hope this issue can be addressed in a future update. Thank you for your attention and continued development of these powerful tools.

Hi Dani,

Thanks for the warm welcome and for the detailed response!

Yes, both Premiere Pro and After Effects are now up to date, and it seems the issue has been resolved with the latest update. I was indeed experiencing the problem with the Crop effect inside the Effect Controls panel under Video > Motion, but everything seems to be working properly now.

Appreciate the support from the community!

Best,
Finfin

Hi @Finfin,

Welcome to the Premiere Pro forums and sorry you're experiencing issues. Are both Premiere Pro and After Effects up-to-date? What exact versions are they? It sounds like this is happening with the Crop effect that is now included in the Effect Controls panel under Video > Motion, correct? As a workaround, are you able to use the separate Crop effect under the Effects panel > Video Effects > Crop?

What type of media are you working with and what are the media file properties? Are there

Hi @Finfin,

Welcome to the Premiere Pro forums and sorry you're experiencing issues. Are both Premiere Pro and After Effects up-to-date? What exact versions are they? As a workaround, are you able to use the separate Crop effect under the Effects panel > Video Effects > Crop?

What type of media are you working with and what are the media file properties? Are there any other adjustments made to the clip you are trying to replace with an After Effects Composition?

Hope we can help you soon,

Dani
